On Dec. 9th, 2007, Platinum Fighting held it's first ever team fighting championships, in Manila, Philippines. The event was the semi-finals, showcasing 4 teams, managed by MMA legends Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Gokor Chivichyan, and Josh Barnett.
The Areneta Coliseum was buzzing in anticipation, as Team Shamrock started off the show, facing off against Team Gracie. Once again, Royce and Ken would face off, but this time they would be behind the cage coaching, as opposed to battling inside. Even Dunham started Team Shamrock off on the right foot with a guillotine submission over Cleber Luciano. Team Shamrock took a commanding 2-0 lead, after a Unanimous Decision victory by Kyacey Uscola over Jorge "Macaco" Patino. With Team Gracie's back against the wall, their last hope fell onto the back of Daniel Serafian. However, he was going up against Mike Whitehead, who was determined to get Team Shamrock the win. With a Unanimous Decision victory for Whitehead, Team Shamrock was 3-0, and on their way to the finals. Fight #4 saw Ricco Rodriguez defeat Kevin Filal via leg kicks. Ricco is a former UFC HW champ, and looking to get back on track. The victory here definitely helped the big man's confidence. Rounding out the Shamrock vs Gracie match were Tonya Evinger and Kat Alendal, who managed to snag Fight of the Night honors. Tonya made ita clean sweep for Team Shamrock, getting the submission victory, and giving Team Gracie the goose egg.
Now it was time for Team Barnett vs Team Gokor, to see who would earn the right to battle Team Gracie in the finals. Team Barnett started off with a Unanimous Decision victory, as Koji Oishi defeated Karen Darabedyan. Apparently Team Barnett enjoys going the distance, as match #2 saw yet another Unanimous Decision victory for them, with Yuki Kondo defeating August Wallen. With Team Gokor desperately needing a victory to keep their hopes alive, Rodney Faverus did not have the envious task of facing off against Renato "Babalu" Sobral. Just 3 minutes into round 1, Babalu secured not only a submission victory, but the overall victory for Team Barnett. Jeff Monson completed the sweep for Team Barnett, with a Unanimous Decision victory over Hakim Gouram. Unfortunately, Ginele Marquez' opponent did not make weight, and therefore she secured the victory by forfeit.
So the finals are set for Macau. Team Shamrock taking on Team Barnett. Neither team had to face defeat in the Philippines, but all that will change in China. Someone must lose. but one thing is for certain...there's no way anyone is leaving there with a clean sweep.
